My very first pen

See that? It’s my first pen. No, it’s not actually the first pen I’ve ever had. But it’s MY first pen. The first pen with MY business name on it. MM&J Consulting.

Yes, I have a business. Me.  If you had asked me 5 years ago if this is where I saw my life, I would have laughed hysterically and said you were insane. I was a married woman, mother of a little girl and pregnant with another one on the way. My purpose in life was to take care of my child, my house, and my husband. Not necessarily in that order. Working outside the home was discouraged and not necessary, which was fine with me. After all, if I had a full-time job OUTSIDE of the house, who would do my full-time job INSIDE the house?

Today, I am a single parent and the primary care-giver to those two little girls who are 7 and 4. I went back to school with the hopes that I could make a career for myself in an industry that would allow me the flexibility to work around my “motherhood” demands.

And then I started blogging.  Life hasn’t been the same since.

Slowly, my world changed. I started to remember that there was a ME inside, buried underneath the years of putting others above myself. I started to like things about myself again – to admire things that I could accomplish with my words. I challenged myself to do things that scared me. I met new people. I stretched and grew beyond anything I thought possible for myself.

And I really looked at my family and what type of work I needed in order to be the kind of mother I wanted to be for my little girls. That’s when I decided to CREATE something for myself instead of try to wedge myself in to someone else’s idea of a career for me.

Now, I am working towards that with my business.  I spend a part of every day, doing what I love. – blogging and teaching others about social media and where it can fit in to their lives and businesses.  I’m good at it, I’m passionate about it, and I’m setting an example for my daughters that anything is possible.

So you see, this pen isn’t really just a pen.  It’s part of a bigger picture that is me taking another step in to my future.  The future that I am creating for myself and my family.

What are you creating for your future?

  1. I am so proud of you and I see nothing but amazing things for your future!

  2. What an amazing journey you have already taken! Cannot wait to watch as you continue doing extraordinary things! And I promise to not follow too closely at BlogHer. I’ll be stealth. Like Godzilla.

Doing what you love and turning that into a career is the absolute ideal — congratulations on creating yours!
I love your elucidation: “…if I had a full-time job OUTSIDE of the house, who would do my full-time job INSIDE the house?” (As a solo, working mom, I feel that every day, lol!)
Congrats on your logo’ed pen! (Is it purple ink?) 🙂

    • Jennifer Evers says:

Thanks Lisa! I wanted to be purple ink but didn’t think the guys would like writing with them that way!

  4. So exciting! My mom has told me to figure out what you love to do and then figure out how to get paid for it – looks like you are doing exactly that! Wishing you every success!
